Candida, (Candidiasis), is a fungal infection (also called a Yeast Infection) which affects various regions in the body such as:
-Genitals of both gender
It’s mainly caused by the opportunistic overgrowth of Candida / Yeast (usually Candida albicans ) which is part of normal flora of human body.
However, candida can easily be isolated and recognized by simple light microscope after appropriate preparing of the slide. A good laboratory and their proper procedures helps to ensure that the organism isolated is the one really responsible for the infection.
Causes of Candidiasis
There is no doubt antibiotics are very useful and integral part of most of the treatment regimens these days, specifically in surgeries and systemic infections. However, excess of anything is dangerous and so is the case with antibiotics.
Antibiotics, literally means “against life,” and are used to kill bacteria and parasites. However, antibiotics don’t know which bacteria are useful, which are harmful, and which are part of normal flora of the body. If the normal/protective flora of the skin or mucous membranes of mouth and vagina are killed, the opportunistic organisms like yeast (candida) get a chance to proliferate without any opposition and thus resulting in infection like candidiasis.
It’s wise not to overuse antibiotics so that the normal functioning of the body isn’t disturbed.
High potency antiseptic soaps and detergents kill the local and protective organisms off the skin and mucous membranes too, resulting in the same effect as does the antibiotic, thus giving chance to opportunistic organisms like candida to proliferate without any opposition.
Toxic chemical (e.g Chlorine and Fluoride)
Both chlorine and fluoride help kill bacteria, thus killing the useful bacteria too, which again allows for the organisms escaping from the chlorinated or fluoride rich preparations, like yeast (candida), will find more space and nutrition to grow and thus result in candidiasis. Chlorinating, and the addition of fluoride to edibles, water and usable items needlessly will result in the yeast infection too.
Swimming pools usually have chlorinated water, which result in fungal/yeast infection of the swimmers later due to the same reason.
Diabetes, along with many other issues and infections, comes with yeast infection and candidiasis too. Elevated blood sugar favors candida to grow and thus results in candidiasis. Candida causes serious trouble to diabetics due to the other associated issues in those patients.
Hormone imbalances result in disruption of normal bodily functions and thus affecting normal flora and friendly bacteria of the various parts of the body.
Hormone imbalances due to pregnancy, menopause, contraceptive pills, etc. are also associated with candidiasis.
Patients with AIDS or an immunocompromised state due to any other disease are specifically susceptible to secondary infection by candida and other organisms.
Whenever an infection is suspected, don’t start treating with antibiotics without consultation with a qualified and expert physician. Your doctor might advise some laboratory testing, such as the organic acids test (OAT) or the gastrointestinal pathogen screen w/h. pylori (#401-h), to confirm the organism involved in the infection. Mainly pathologic examinations of the culture from the affected site and some blood and urine tests from a reputable laboratory can help diagnose the condition easily.
